It's Thursday so that means it's time for...an update of some sort? Printed copies of How to Draw Black People are on the way! There was a snafu with the printer that is going to delay things beyond the holidays, however, the books look great and I can't wait till you all get to see them.
How am I doing, you ask?
Well, first of all, thank you for asking, secondly I'm doing good. Doing good takes a lot of work though. Holidays are tough for me, mentally so that kinda puts me at a lower level of...well everything. But I'm not too depressed. Every now and then my thoughts get really dark and I have to remind myself to get out of my head. The biggest thing for me right now is trying to keep more to myself. Refuse to give explanations unless I want to, just really learning to listen to myself, my body, etc. It's hard because if I'm not being used by someone I realized I feel a bit inadequate...and there's absolutely nothing OK about.
But I'm rolling with it and trying to stick to healthy coping mechanisms, building good habits, and stuff. I have such a hunger to make more fiction! Like, I've been reading a lot of books and living in other people's worlds and I love world-building. So, I really wanna rush right back into the stories I have kicking around in my head BUT that's also what I've learned, shit takes time. My work is WAAAAAAY better when I give myself time to finish it and all my career I've been trying to push stuff out as fast as humanly possible. So now I'm trying to work through a whole process creatively and that's also been keeping the depression away. On the art side of things, I really can't draw just for the sake of drawing. Like if I can't use what I'm drawing or it doesn't serve my needs my motivation just fizzles out. So I'm sticking to things that move me yet at the same time I want to KEEP drawing because not drawing makes me feel crappy. With that in mind, I'm thinking of a webcomic based on my experiences being an app worker. No particular narrative, I just wanna recount some of the wild days I be having.
There brush tips from my HTDBP brush set will be available this weekend as well as some hot spot maps for faces. I didn't really get the chance to cover hot spots in the pages of the book so I decided I would post some info here. If you're just now getting into coloring and not knowledgable about some photography basics then that update will be great for you.
